I am struggling today. Not feeling well, not feeling motivated, feeling blue. I didn't accomplish much yesterday. I worked out 25 minutes in the morning. Ate ok. Can't remember breakfast but it was ok I guess !!!! Snack, carrots, celery and green peppers with a tad of ranch. Lunch was a salad with flax seed, a few almonds and oz of ham and 1 T of ranch and tea. Supper was taco soup with a dab of sour cream and a small amount of crunchy frito type chips on top, 3/4 oz of cheese. Snack, some popcorn.
My problem is that I fell going out to the compost pile on some ice and snow and went down on my knees and hip. Not good ...now both knees hurt. Makes it very hard to feel motivated to exercise and such. Makes me mad and makes me sad.....hence want to eat a candy bar but thanks to Melissa's pep talk have resisted so far.
I want to be able to walk without pain. Running sounds so good but not sure I will ever be able to at my age without doing damage. I couldn't even do it when I lost weight before.
Read something online that said that you can lose but maintaining is hard. Your metabolism slows down and your brain wants to think about food. It says to maintain weight loss ..you need to of course watch what you eat but you need to exercise at a minimum 5 hours a week. Guess that was my problem and why I didn't keep it off.
Very good work on resisting the candy bar! That's hard to do when you are seeking some comfort food. When I am strong and able to resist something I want to eat that's not for hunger issues, I tell myself, I have to walk around in the house for 10-15 minutes first. It usually gets my mind off the reason I'm wanting to eat in the first place. I realize that's harder at work when you can't do whatever you want at any time, but you did it!
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to get moving when you are hurting, but even what you are able to do is much better than doing nothing! Keep at it and it will slowly and surely come off. Your hard work and determination WILL pay off in the end, even on the days you are discouraged and feeling like nothing is happening as quickly as you want it. But celebrate that you've already lost over 3 1/2 pounds in a little over a week. That's great work!
Cecil is such a good encourager...ditto her comments.
ReplyDeleteNow on to other less touchy feely comments.
Food: Did you log it yesterday? Seems like a small amount of food...just eyeballing it... Just looking at what you are eating the word deprivation comes to mind. I get the feeling that you feel you need to deprive yourself to make this work. Make sure you are using your calories. Perhaps I am wrong....? I personally did not deprive myself of anything when I was/am losing weight....however, if I chose to eat a candy bar or have dessert or whatever...that sure means I had to take it into account for that day's total. What I found was that it really wasn't worth it much of the time to eat that item I was craving. As time went on, I really had no desire to waste my calories on that AND I didn't feel like I was being deprived either, cause if I really really felt like I needed it, I ate it. The key with that method is to not "cheat" by not writing it down. You eat it, you write it down.
Exercise: If you WANT to run...why can't you? The biggest loser should show you that it is possible if you truly want to. But for that matter, I wouldn't worry about running...walking is a great exercise. The pain in the knees...sounds like you have a bruise or sore muscles. You are not going to injure yourself by working through the discomfort. On a weekly basis I have some sort of pain that I work through. Don't let it stop you from moving. Do what you can. Exercise often helps alleviate those discomforts. Sitting and getting tight makes it worse.
Mood: It is easy to get discouraged and not feel like working out. Again...something I go through on a regular basis. You just need to commit and decide you are at least going to try to work out. Once you get going it usually isn't as bad as your mind was making it out to be and you will finish and remarkably your mood will lift. Just keep plugging away. Exercise is a natural anti-depressant.
Online advice: Yes, as you lose weight your metabolism slows down...in a way. It takes less calories to run a 160 lb body than a 260 lb body. As a person loses weight, calorie adjustments need to be made. One cannot just go back to eating what a 260 lb person eats to maintain their weight when they now weigh 160 lbs. Your metabolism slows down as you age mostly due to decreasing muscle mass. That is where the exercise will come in...building muscle will allow you to keep your metabolism "high" as muscle needs more fuel than fat to live. If you do zero exercise at 160 lbs you may only need 1500 calories per day to maintain...that is a small amount of food to live on forever. If you exercise you will be burning several hundred calories extra plus building muscle mass that will need extra fuel. You may be able to eat 1800 calories which is a comfortable amount. That is just an example...I didn't do any calculations...it may be off (disclaimer over). Losing/gaining/maintaining is all basic science...if you burn more than you take in you will lose and if you take in more than you burn you will gain.
All right that is all for now. Practical, not touchy feely daughter out. =).
